There is a lot of controversy surrounding vaccines these days, but little attention is being paid to the scientific breakthroughs regarding vaccines recently. There is promising research being done on the role that nano-particles may be able to play in vaccinating humans.
Typically, viruses and bacterial infections get to humans through mucosal surfaces like intestinal tracts and lungs, to name a few. Vaccines have been applied to lungs to try and protect them from bacteria and viruses.
Usually, it is sprayed onto the lungs, but the lungs get rid of the material before it can protect from pathogens by creating an immune response.
So, basically, the vaccine is not able to stick around in the mucosal areas long enough to do any good. However, nano-particles have a way of protecting the vaccine so that the mucosal surfaces can’t get rid of it right away. This means, a huge potential for testing and using vaccines and making sure that they are effective enough.
Using nano-particle technology means that the vaccines are sturdier but they have also been tested on rats, showing that they can actually stop the spread of infection. In some cases, antigens like HIV and cancer covered cheap pills in nano-particles were more easily gotten rid of by the body’s immune system.
